Feb. 16, 1862 – Union General Ulysses S. Grant captured Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River. This victory gave the Union control of northern Tennesee and paved the way for the occupation of Nashville. The battle earned Grant the nickname “Unconditional Surrender.”
